WILMINGTON HISTORIC AREA
Part of Wilmington’s historic charm is our variety of historic areas. After river transportation declined and the railroad left, after World War II, our old historic buildings became boarding houses. In the early 1970’s, the Historic District began its renaissance. Now we have a wonderful collection of colonial, Victorian, Greek Revival, and Italianate architecture spreading through a growing historic district.
Today the Historic District stretches north and south of Market Street. It includes a wonderful mix of restaurants, shops, and lovely homes. Gothic churches, the public library, Thalian Hall, museums and municipal buildings combine to make it a charming place to live.
Most of the homes in the area feature hardwood floors, volume ceilings, front porches and great attention to detail. Many of the homes have been restored, but there are still bargains out there for those willing to rehab the distressed properties. Homes in the historic district range from $125,000 up to the $1,000,000 range, depending on location and condition.
The Historic Overlay District, Carolina Heights and Carolina Place developed in the early 1900's and are charming areas just outside the Historic District. Charming bungalows, elegant colonials, and tudors line the streets. They have larger yards than homes in the Historic District. Sheltered by large trees, their welcoming porches encourage you to relax and stay awhile! These homes range from $135,000-$500,000 range.
In the 1920’s and 1930’s Forest Hills began to develop. Wilmington families started leaving the downtown area for new development. Only three miles from downtown, this neighborhood has remained an address of distinction with large yards, luscious landscaping, beautiful oak trees and backyard alley access. This area comes alive with color in Spring as the azales and dogwoods put on their annual show. With diversity in sizes and styles, these homes range from $225,000-$875,000.
